After earning an Bachelor of Music (Boston University in 1963) as well as observing liberal arts education as an instructor (Brown University 1971-75), i am now fully committed to the integrated method of learning which includes studying arts alongside other disciplines. There is no reason to be surprised that the ethnomusicologist, who holds a doctorate as well as an MA from UCLA has a keen interest in the arts. The program in ethnomusicology that I started in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) is a good fit in a department of music within the College of Letters and Science. It's fun to pursue several subjects. It is also fun to see the bigger view. It's an absolute pleasure to instruct graduate and undergraduate students. I am an published and the author of three volumes: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing music and expressing culture. I also have times where I'm the sole professor and other periods in which I perform administrative duties (such as the Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988 and the Dean for Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998, as well as Chair of Deans at the College of Letters and Science between 1994 and 1998).
